Pharmacology

Levamisole is a cholinergic agent. It stimulates ganglion & depolarizes muscle of the worm. The duel effect causes paralysis of the worms. The paralyzed worms can no more maintain their station in the gut and are consequently flushed out of the host. Triclabendazole is the most recent derivative of Benzimidazoles. It is highly effective against all stages of liver flukes, from 1 day old to adult. Benzimidazoles bind to b-tubulin, a structural protein, and block polymerization of tubulin into microtubules. This damages the integrity & transport functions of cells within the parasite and ultimately kills the parasite.
