World Retina Week
September 19-25, 2017 marks World Retina Week, where awareness is raised on eye care. This week allows experts to educate the public on treatments and eye care.

Retinasa.org.za explain that research progress in genetics, stem cells, artificial vision and other exciting fields are fulfilling the dream of treatments for retinal genetic conditions such as Macular Dystrophies, Stargardt Dystrophy, Retinitis Pigmentosa, Usher Syndrome and Age Related Macular Degeneration.

According to healthline.com, the retina is a thin layer of tissue that lines the back of the eye on the inside. Located near the optic nerve, the purpose of the retina is to receive light that the lens has focused, convert the light into neural signals, and send these signals on to the brain for visual recognition. Experts explain that due to the retina’s vital role in vision, “damage to it can cause permanent blindness.”
