Indications
Broad spectrum antibiotic widely used for the treatment of urinary and respiratory tract infections. For the treatment of severe infections caused by susceptible gram positive and gram negative bacteria including species of pseudomonas, proteus, many coliform bacilli and mycoplasma as well. Effective in enteric disease of neonates like scour and salmonellosis.

Pharmacology
Gentamicin is a broad spectrum aminoglycoside antibiotic which is highly effective against many strains of Gram Negative and Gram Positive micro-organisms such as E.coli, Salmonella, Pasteurella, Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Listeria, Pseudomonus, etc. The oral Gentamicin is slowly and poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract hence it concentrates in the intestine that shows its antibacterial action locally and leading to a high efficacy against the bacterial gastro enteric infections.
Dosage & Administration
For intramuscular/intravenous injection only
- Cattle/Buffalo/Horse: 1.0 ml/25 kg body weight.
- Goat/Sheep/Dog/Cat/Other small animals: 0.4-1.0 ml/10 kg body weight.
- Administer by deep intramuscular or slow intravenous injection twice on the first day of treatment at 12 hours interval and repeat from second day once daily for 3-5 days.
- Poultry: 0.05-0.1 ml/ kg body weight.
- Administer by intramuscular or subcutaneous injection twice on the first day of treatment at 12 hours interval and repeat from 2 nd day once daily for 3-5 days. Or, as directed by the Registered Veterinary Physician.
- Poultry: 1 g per 2 liters of drinking water for 3-5 days.
- Cattle, Sheep & Goat (and off-spring): 3 g per 20 kg bodyweight twice daily for 3-5 days (30 mg/ kg Body Weight). Or advised by the registered veterinarian.
Interaction
With medicine: Potential drug interaction may occur with other aminoglycosides and bacteriostatic antibiotics.

Contraindications
Gentamicin Injection is contraindicated to patients hypersensitive to Gentamicin. It is contraindicated in pregnancy and myasthenia gravis.
Side Effects
Common side effects: Nausea, vomiting, stomach upset, loss of appetite, and injection site reactions (pain, irritation, and redness) may be seen.
Rare side effects: Hypocalcemia, neuromuscular paralysis, nephrotoxicity and ototoxicity have been reported with high and prolonged medication.

Pregnancy & Lactation
Should not be used in pregnant or lactating animals. However, risk & necessity should be considered during administration of medicine in pregnant & lactating animals.
Precautions & Warnings
Antibiogram is recommended before administration. In case of urinary tract infection alkaline feed is recommended.

Overdose Effects
Early signs of toxicity include loss of hearing and balance or vomiting. Moreover, increase or decrease in water intake, loss of appetite, depression, coma and death may be reported.
