Sulphanilamide

Veterinary

Indications

Sulphanilamide Powder is used to treat sulphanilamide-sensitive organisms, notably streptococcal septicaemia; equine pneumonia, strangles, joint-ill, metritis in mares, cows and ewes. Sulphanilamide Powder is also used as a dusting powder for wounds by topical application.

Pharmacology

Sulfanilamide is a competitive inhibitor of the bacterial enzyme dihydropteroate synthetase. This enzyme normally uses Para Amino Benzoic Acid (PABA) for synthesizing the necessary folic acid. The inhibited reaction is normally necessary in these organisms for the synthesis of folic acid. Thus Sulfanilamide inhibits microorganism replication.
