Indications

This preparation is indicated-
  • For prevention of dehydration & management of diarrhea
  • In all types of dehydration

Composition

For 500 ml preparation: Each sachet contains-
  • Sodium Chloride BP 0.88 gm
  • Potassium Chloride BP 0.76 gm
  • Sodium citrate BP 1.50 gm
  • Citric Acid BP 0.88 gm
  • Glucose Anhy. BP 8.18 gm
  • Dried Sucrose BP 6.14 gm

Pharmacology

This is a type of fluid replacement used as a treatment for dehydration. As our bodies are made mostly of water (70%), ensuring that we are always well hydrated is extremely important to our well being. For your body to maintain its proper balance and for it to function at an optimum level, it is estimated that you need to top up with at least 2 litres per day, in addition to the all the fluids you obtain from your food.

Dosage & Administration

The amount of water removed from the body, an equivalent quantity of mixture should be given. After each loose motion.
  • Children below 2 years: 50-100 ml (10-20 teaspoonfuls) prepared saline.
  • Children between 2-10 years: 100-200 ml (20-40 teaspoonful) prepared saline.
  • Children above 10 years and adults: 200-400 ml (1-2 glasses) of prepared saline.

Precautions & Warnings

ORS should not be mixed with hot water and the mixture should not be heated. The mixture must be discarded after 12 hours from preparation.
