Indications

Poultry: Pefloxacin is indicated for the disease of poultry caused by bacteria and mycoplasma such as Salmonellosis, Colisepticemia, CRD, Infectious Coryza, Pasteurellosis, Mycoplasmosis and for secondary bacterial infection followed by viral infection such as Gumboro and Newcastle diseases.

Fish & Shrimp: Pefloxacin is indicated for the disease of fish & shrimp such as Aromonus, Septicemia, Furunculosis, Columnaria, Vivriosis, Bacterial Gill etc.

Pharmacology

Bactericidal effect of Pefloxacin is due to its ability to inhibit the activity of bacterial enzymes DNA gyrase which is responsible for the supercoiling of bacterial DNA.

Dosage & Administration

Poultry-
  • Prevention: 1 g per 2-4 liter drinking water (2.5-5 mg per kg body weight). Duration: 3-5 days.
  • Treatment: 1 g per 1 liter drinking water (10 mg per kg body weight). Duration: 3-5 days.
Fish & Shrimp-
  • 1 g per 20 kg body weight. Duration: 3-5 days.

Interaction

It shows antagonistic reaction if use with chloramphenicol, macrolides or nitrofurans. It's effectiveness may be decreased if use with iron, magnesium, aluminium or zinc.

Contraindications

Contraindicated in animals with known hypersensitivity to Pefloxacin.

Side Effects

It is well tolerated & no side effect has been observed.

Precautions & Warnings

Egg production may be reduced, if used in laying chicken.

Withdrawal period: Meat: 7 days.

Store in a cool & dry place, protected from light. Keep all medicines out of the reach of children.
