Pharmacology
Toltrazuril liquid acts both on the schizogony and the gametogony stages of the parasites. Giving treatment by Toltrazuril liquid after the coccidia infection the light and electron microscopic studies showed that all intracellular development stages of Eimeria are damaged. The changes occur only in the parasites and do not affect the tissue cells of the host animals. These findings suggest that toltrazuril interferes with the division of the nucleus and with the activity of the mitochondria, which are responsible for the respiratory metabolism of the parasites. In all intracellular development stages a severe vacuolization due to inflation of the endoplasmatic reticulum occurs. In the macrogametes it damages the so-called wall-forming bodies II. Toltrazuril liquid thus has coccidicidal rather than coccidiostatic action.
