Indications
Prindol is indicated for the treatment of muscle tension/spasm (central and peripheral muscle spasms), neck spasm (torticollis), low back pain (lumbago) and general muscle pain.
Pharmacology
Central Muscle Relaxant Effect: Pridinol primarily targets the Central Nervous System (CNS). It acts on the brainstem and the spinal cord, where it selectively inhibits polysynaptic reflexes. In simple terms, when a muscle is injured or strained, the nervous system sends continuous, hyperactive signals causing the muscle to stay locked in a painful contraction (spasm). Pridinol dampens these overactive reflexes, effectively blocking the excessive neurological signals traveling from the spine to the muscles. This allows the skeletal muscles to relax and reduces localized tension.
Anticholinergic (Antimuscarinic) Action: Pridinol possesses distinct antimuscarinic properties. It acts as an antagonist to acetylcholine, a primary neurotransmitter responsible for triggering muscle contractions. By blocking the muscarinic acetylcholine receptors- It directly counters the chemical signals that trigger muscle spasms in both smooth and skeletal muscles. This specific action is also why it helps reduce muscle rigidity and tremors associated with parkinsonism.
