Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) authorities are planning to set up a full-fledged bone marrow transplant unit.

This was revealed yesterday by Professor Dr Shahidullah Sikder, pro-vice chancellor (research and development) of the BSMMU, as he was addressing a seminar on bone marrow transplantation at Dhaka Club in the capital.

Bangladesh Society of Hematology organised the seminar.

Dr Md Salauddin Shah, secretary general of Bangladesh Society of Hematology and the keynote speaker at the seminar, said the number of blood cancer patients, and other patients of blood-related diseases, was rising gradually in the country.

More than 2.5 crore people have been suffering from such diseases, he said.

“Every year, 1,200 new patients are diagnosed with such diseases. Amid such a situation, the bone marrow unit at the BSMMU would create the opportunity for the patients to receive quality treatment at a cost which is one-tenth of the money required for treatment in the developed countries,” he added.

There is only one bone marrow transplant unit at Dhaka Medical College Hospital but it is not a full-fledged facility.

Speakers at the seminar identified consumption of adulterated food, environment pollution, uncontrolled use of drugs and excessive use harmful chemical as the reasons behind the increase in the number of blood disease patients.

Dr Md Abdul Aziz presided over the seminar while Professor Dr Colonel (retd) Abdul Hai and Professor Brigadier General (retd) AKM Mustafa Abedin attended as special guests.
